Mohonk Mountain House is 25 miles from Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, 70 miles from Albany Airport and less than 100 miles from New York City area airports. Getting ThereMohonk is easily accessible by car and is about 90 miles from New York City (which New Yorkers will tell you can take a couple of hours or twice as long depending on city traffic). Fixtures, carpeting, furniture and decor are either original or reproduction period pieces comfortably arranged in vast public spaces and the dozens of cozy nooks throughout the seven-story hotel. Hallways serve as a kind of vertical scrapbook, with photographs, paintings, maps, textiles, news clippings, floor plans and artifacts of the hotel’s history and geography, worthy of taking the time to review. Room service is included as is a lighter, faster breakfast in the Lake Lounge for those with early morning activities. A tradition in summer, The Granary takes meals outdoors by the lake for indulgences such as lobster bakes and barbecues. Order up fancy coffee and ice cream drinks at The Old Fashioned Soda Fountain.

How a hotel with 265 guest rooms can be cozy is a paradox, but it is. Nooks and crannies, parlors and bays are scattered throughout, each with sofas and easy chairs. On our fall visit to Mohonk, we took a late-morning tour that filled us in on the history of Mohonk and its founding family, the Smileys, who still own and operate the hotel. The talk began in the lovely Lake Lounge, the hotel’s social center, flanked on two sides by a porch lined with rocking chairs.

Then, finally, after a destructive rainstorm, the railroad was officially abandoned. By the time the middle of the century rolled around, any remains of the railroad and its accompanying structures that couldn’t be salvaged for scrap were dynamited away.

The government realized that the railroad was on federal land and hadn’t been built with a proper lease. Then, in 1900, Echo Mountain House—dubbed “The White City in the Sky”—caught fire. No guests or staff were injured, and the hotel might have staged a comeback if it had been appropriately insured. Reportedly, it had only been insured for one-fifth of the damage that the fire caused.
Crowds for the thematic programs vary, but it's unlikely the place will be taken over by swing dancers or dieters. Adirondack Trailways goes to New Paltz from New York City (about $40 round/trip, with weekday discounts) and other points in New York. In season, go to Mohonk to canoe, ski, fish, golf, ride horses, throw an axe, shoot an arrow, scramble over rocks, practice yoga, swim, spa, forest bathe, play tennis or drink a martini. There's a small selection of kickboards and floaters and goggles available. Towels are provided and there are changing rooms with lockers, hair dryers and bathing suit dryers. Usually an hour a day is reserved for adult swim, so watch the schedule to know when that occurs. There's a sign-in and key card entry system but there is no lifeguard so kids need to be minded. I can only imagine how wonderful it is to stay here-we only we’re here for the day.
Around MohonkThe Mohonk resort is a vast and immersive experience and once you are on the compound there's not much reason to leave, especially when they feed you so well. But the college town of New Paltz, with its State University of New York (SUNY) campus, provides some alternative eating and shopping options. It's worth a drive down historic Huguenot Street, a former center of Dutch immigrant community dating to the 17th Century.
